Do I use tin foil to dye my highlights back to my (closest) natural hair colour?

Yes it is a good idea. You need ti get a paint brush or something though and get someone to help you. You need to seperate the highlights and put the foil under them then brush on the hair dye and fold it into a little square so u don't get spots on the rest of your head.
