How did women in the 1940's break their ribs?

I was just remembering back in high school I took a fashion class and in the class I remember my teacher said that In the 1940's some women broke their ribs. She told the class she broke them herself as well and I remember she was explaining it but I forgot...Does anyone got an idea?
