Do I need to strip my hair before I home dye it?

I have been going to the hairdressers to have my colour/foils done for about 5 years now but I want to start dying it at home mainly because of cost. Do I have to strip the colours off my hair first before I start dying it myself or should I just put the dye on top of my current colour. Any advice would be great.
